Smith's Keepsakes

Pictured below are the three keepsake's of Edward from his time in the service and as a veteran of the US Army that were slid inside between pages 7 and 8 of his paybook including his Knights of Columbus traveling card, his meal ticket from October 21, 1917 in LaHavre, France, and a newspaper clipping discussing the death of Maurice J. Doyle who was the first man from Estherville to die overseas.

Pictured to the left is Edward's Knight's of Columbus Traveling Card issued to him by Estherville council number 2021 to certify that Edward was a 3rd degree member of the organization until January 1st, 1920. The Knights of Columbus is a international catholic fraternal organization for service with membership reserved to practicing catholic men. The card and membership was issued to Edward on November 10, 1919.

Pictured to the left is Edward's daily bill of fare for his meals on Sunday October 21st, 1917 in LaHavre, France. As described in the unit history, the 126th Field Artillery regiment landed in LaHavre, France on October 12, 1917 after first landing in Europe in Scotland in October 7, 1917 and soon after Edward took part in these meals. As you can see in the food listed these soldiers were quite well fed before reaching the front.
