Notes of Importance: John was shot down on July 16,1944 while on his eighth mission over enemy territory while targeting oil refineries in Vienna, Austria and was taken prisoner by the Germans and held as a POW from July 16, 1944 to May 1945. Following his service and recovery from WWII John reenlisted in the USAAF and was stationed in Germany where he took part in the Berlin Airlift.
